The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called on the Sri Lankan government to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), emphasizing the urgent need for legal reform.
Speaking at a special press conference held yesterday (26) afternoon, concluding his official visit to the country, Türk stated that he had directly requested the government to abolish the PTA. He also revealed that discussions were held with government officials regarding the matter.
Türk further urged the release of individuals who have been detained for extended periods under the PTA, highlighting concerns over prolonged detention without trial.
Commenting on broader human rights issues, the High Commissioner expressed hope for progressive legislative developments in Sri Lanka.
“I hope that the current bill proposing to decriminalize same-sex marriage will be passed very soon,” he said.
In his remarks, he also stressed the need to repeal the Online Safety Act, labeling it as problematic in its current form.
Türk welcomed the decision to resume investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, calling it a “positive step” towards accountability and justice.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of implementing comprehensive security and police reforms in the country.
