According to a report released by the National Audit Office, officials at the Welikada Prison had taken inmates out of the facility on 233 occasions in 2023 to carry out work at their private residences.
The report further reveals that on 64 of these occasions, prisoners were transported using vehicles from the official prison vehicle fleet.
As a result, prison vehicles were driven unlawfully for a total distance of 332 kilometers, raising serious concerns about the misuse of state resources and the breach of prison protocols.
