The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) has successfully established control over the Batticaloa Municipal Council.
According to Batticaloa District Parliamentarian Shanakkian Rasamanikkam, ITAK candidate Sivam Pakkiyanathan was elected Mayor today (11), as announced in a post on his official ‘X’ account.
Pakkiyanathan secured the mayoral position with the backing of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Members of Parliament.
In his post, MP Rasamanikkam also alleged that the National People’s Power (NPP) government resorted to unconventional tactics in an attempt to secure the council. He revealed that the government reportedly sought to form an alliance with the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP), led by former MP Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, known as Pillayan.
Rasamanikkam further emphasized concerns regarding this alliance, noting that Pillayan is currently under arrest on multiple serious charges. The MP questioned the government’s readiness to collaborate with such an individual in its pursuit of power.
