Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala today (20) informed Parliament regarding investigations carried out into potential life threats against Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, and other politicians.

Addressing Parliament, he stated that the Prime Minister’s Office had received a threatening email containing death threats against Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.

Accordingly, an Additional Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office had lodged a complaint, and a request was made to Google for a report regarding the email. The Minister stated that this report has now been received.

He informed Parliament that the IP address associated with the threatening email had been traced to links with the Netherlands and Germany, and that the relevant report would be submitted to the court immediately upon receipt.

Furthermore, Minister Wijepala revealed that in relation to threats against the life of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, the Ministry had received a complaint in August 2024 via its emergency telephone line.

According to that complaint, an associate of underworld leader ‘Loku Patti’ was reportedly preparing to carry out a sniper attack targeting the Opposition Leader.

“We launched an investigation into the complaint. It was found that the information provided by the informant was false. An investigation was also conducted into the mobile phone number from which the complaint originated. It has been confirmed that the claims in the complaint were false,” the Minister informed Parliament.
