Sri Lanka Welcomes 2 Millionth Tourist in 2023, Marking a Historic Milestone in Tourism Recovery

Sri Lanka celebrated a major milestone in its tourism sector as the 2 millionth tourist of the year arrived from Bangkok at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). This marks the first time in five years that annual tourist arrivals have crossed the 2 million threshold.

This significant achievement is only the fourth instance in the country’s history, following similar milestones in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ruwan Ranasinghe, and Chairman of the Tourism Promotion Bureau, Buddhika Hewawasam, were present at BIA to warmly welcome the milestone tourist. A special ceremony was also organized at the Silk Route Lounge of the airport by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau to commemorate the occasion.

As per official statistics, Sri Lanka welcomed 195,127 tourists in the first 26 days of December, with projections indicating the figure may surpass 250,000 by the end of the month. Notably, February 2019 remains the only month in history to have exceeded 250,000 tourist arrivals.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism highlighted the sector’s impressive recovery after years of setbacks caused by the 2019 Easter attacks, the COVID-19 pandemic, and an ongoing economic crisis. The Ministry attributed this resurgence to proactive measures by the new government.

Efforts to address delays in online visa processing for foreign tourists, coupled with initiatives to enhance tourist safety and support for travel service providers, have bolstered confidence in Sri Lanka as a destination.

Over the past three months, the country recorded 515,192 tourist arrivals. To further strengthen the sector, the government has introduced free visa facilities for citizens from 39 countries and is targeting an ambitious goal of attracting 3 million tourists by 2025.

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, a critical driver of the nation’s economy, is poised for continued growth as global travelers once again embrace the island’s unique offerings.
