A pilot programme aimed at sterilising monkeys to mitigate the widespread destruction of crops begins today in Matale.
The Ministry of Agriculture has allocated Rs. 4.5 million to fund this initiative, which is being carried out with the assistance of several veterinarians. Under the programme, monkeys will be transported to the Wildlife Research and Training Centre in Giritale, where they will undergo sterilisation before being released back into their natural habitats.
The Ministry plans to expand this initiative across the country in the near future, providing a more comprehensive solution to the issue of crop destruction caused by monkeys.
Commenting on his recent remarks in Parliament regarding the matter, Agriculture Minister K.D. Lalkantha clarified that his statements were focused on addressing the monkey menace to safeguard farmers’ livelihoods. He acknowledged concerns raised by environmentalists over the potential harm to monkeys but emphasised that the programme aims to control the population in a humane and sustainable manner.
This initiative represents a critical step towards resolving a longstanding challenge faced by farmers while balancing environmental considerations.
