Former State Minister Lohan Ratwatte, who was arrested and remanded for allegedly threatening to kill a lawyer following a drunken driving incident involving a Defender jeep, made a public apology in court today (9th).
The case, heard at the Fort Magistrate’s Court, centered on allegations that Ratwatte had issued death threats. During the proceedings, Ratwatte extended an apology to the lawyer, Akalanka Ukawatte, in open court.
Representing the aggrieved party, the Bar Association noted that Ratwatte had agreed to pay Rs. 1 million as a settlement to the victim. The lawyer for the aggrieved party confirmed that this agreement was acceptable and expressed willingness to resolve the matter.
Taking into account the submissions made, Fort Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali ordered Ratwatte’s release on two surety bonds of Rs. 1 million each.
This resolution marks a turning point in the case, which had drawn significant public attention.
