Dr Uludağ, known for his mastery of the traditional Turkish instrument ‘Bağlama,’ will share his musical talents with the audience during his short stay.

The concert is scheduled to take place on Monday, 12th August 2024, at 7:00 p.m. at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies, located at 24 Horton Place, Colombo 7. The Bağlama, an instrument deeply connected with Turkish culture, is expected to offer a captivating experience to all who attend.

The Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye invites all to attend this special event. Attendees are requested to confirm their participation by noon on the same day, Monday, 12th August 2024. Confirmation can be made via email at [email protected] or by phone at 0716 947488.

This event promises to be a unique opportunity to experience the rich musical heritage of Türkiye, and the Embassy looks forward to welcoming guests to this cultural evening.

The Bağlama: An Iconic Instrument of Turkish Culture

The Bağlama, often referred to as the “saz,” is a deeply symbolic and iconic instrument in Turkish folk music. With its origins tracing back to ancient Central Asia, the Bağlama has played a central role in Turkish musical traditions for centuries. It is characterized by its long neck and pear-shaped body, typically crafted from wood. The instrument’s strings, usually made from steel, are plucked or strummed with a plectrum, creating a rich and resonant sound that is both melancholic and soulful.

What sets the Bağlama apart is its unique tuning system, which allows for a wide range of notes, giving the instrument its distinctively expressive and versatile nature. It is often used to accompany traditional Turkish folk songs, known as “türkü,” which convey stories of love, nature, and the human experience. The instrument is also a key component in “aşık” (minstrel) traditions, where poets and musicians use the Bağlama to accompany their recitations of epic tales and lyrical poetry.

In modern times, the Bağlama has transcended its folk origins and found a place in contemporary Turkish music, as well as in world music genres. Its emotive sound and cultural significance make it a powerful tool for preserving and promoting Turkish heritage. The instrument is not only a medium of musical expression but also a symbol of the deep connection between the Turkish people and their history.

Dr. Erdal Uludağ’s performance with the Bağlama will offer a rare opportunity to experience this iconic instrument’s profound impact firsthand, bringing to life the rich traditions and emotional depth of Turkish music.
