Parliamentary proceedings were disrupted due to a protest held by the members of the Tamil National Alliance based on a matter related to pastures in Batticaloa.Sri Lanka Latest News

Batticaloa District Member of Parliament Shanakian Rasamanikkam mentioned the protest held in September by dairy farmers in Mailattamadu area expressing their concern about illegal settlements in the area.

The MP said that the farmers are protesting against illegal settlements in the pastures they have been using for more than 60 years, and there are reports that the settlers have occupied these lands illegally, slaughtered cattle and prepared the land.

Protesting in the Parliament today, several MPs of the Tamil National Alliance, including MP Rasamanikkam, have requested the government authorities to intervene to prevent the destruction of cattle and land in the area.

The protest started by the members of the Tamil National Alliance became more intense due to the absence of the minister in charge of the subject in the assembly today, and no response from the government.

Opposition Member of Parliament Dr. Harsha De Silva mentions that during the protest, there was a heated argument between the members of the ruling party, including Member of Parliament Pillayan, and Member of Parliament Shanakian Rasamanikkam.

The protest ended after House Leader Parliamentarian Susil Premajayantha assured that he would inform the Minister of Irrigation in this regard.
