Aralagangwila police say that a group of 10 drunken unruly men broke into the Sri Saddharmarama temple yesterday (30th) on Nikini full moon Poya day while a Bodhi Puja was been performed in the temple and assaulted the Chief monk with death threats. (Sri Lanka Latest News)
According to the investigating police, a 28-year-Samanera thera named Pimburatthewa Dhammarakkhithalankara and his brother were seriously injured in the Pimburatthewa Sri Saddharmaramaya temple.
Aralagangwila police also said that Pimburatthewa Siluminisaya vihara chief Amparae Kusaladhammalankara Nayaka Thero has lodged a complaint with the police that the gang that had broken into the property had stolen a sum of Rs.one lakh rupees.
Aralagangwila Police Station Chief Inspector Indunil Hemapala said that it was a group of youths residing in Aralagangwila Pimburatthewa village who threatened to kill and attacked and damaged the property of the temple.
Pimburatthewa Siluminasayya vihara chief Amparae Kusaladhammalankara Nayaka Thero said that he had complained to Aralagangwila police under several charges including death threats, intimidation, damage to property, robbery, etc.
The Chief Prelate stated that in the past, the novice monks, including himself, acted strongly against illegal drugs in the area, and when some youths of this village became victims of drugs, they publicly assaulted the Chief priest and looted property causing damage.
Chief Inspector Idunil Hemapala added that all the people who entered the temple drunkenly and behaved riotously have fled the area, and they will be arrested very soon and the law will be enforced.
