The Catholic Church, which expressed its displeasure over the lifting of the ban imposed on five Islamic organizations after the terrorist attack on Easter Sunday in 2019, said that the government’s decision in this regard aimed at for the upcoming elections. Sri Lanka Latest News

The organizations United Tawheet Jamaat (UTJ), Lanka Tawheet Jamaat (CTJ), Sri Lanka Tawheet Jamaat (SLTJ), All Lanka Tawheet Jamaat (ACTJ) and Jamiatul Ansari Sunnatul were banned after the Easter attack and President Ranil Wickremesinghe as Defense Minister. Recently this ban was lifted.

Mr. Jude Krishantha Fernando, National Communications Director of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka, speaking to the Morning newspaper, said that the government’s decision to remove the ban imposed on those organizations without extensive study is an insult to the people.

“All these organizations were banned by the government based on the findings of the relevant investigative agencies. How does the government now know that they are not a threat to the country? Are their members at least rehabilitated? The ban imposed on certain organizations during the civil war was removed after a long study of seven or eight years. However, when the related cases are still ongoing and the suspects are still in custody, why is the government in a hurry to lift the ban on these organizations?” he asked.
