It was seen that a poster has been pasted all over Colombo to increase the tax on cigarettes in the upcoming budget and reduce the prices of the food items needed by the people.
These posters were put up by the National Campaign to Free People from Cigarettes.
They point out that the price of a cigarette should be increased by at least 20 rupees and the price of essential goods should be brought down.
Generally, the price of alcohol is increased several times every year, but the price of cigarettes is not increased in the same way.
There has been a serious allegation that the owners of the cigarette companies are preventing the increase in cigarette taxes by giving money to the responsible officials and politicians of the government.
