In a significant political shift, Varuna Rajapaksa, the United National Party (UNP) Organizer for the Gampaha Constituency, and Mahesh Senanayake, the Yatinuwara Constituency Organizer, have officially joined the Samagi Jana Balawegaya today to express their support for Mr. Sajith Premadasa.
During a press conference, both organizers emphasized the need for political unity in order to regain the support of the Southern electorate. They highlighted the critical juncture the country faces, especially following the recent presidential election, in which UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe announced he would step back from politics after the party’s defeat.
Despite Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s victory in the election, Rajapaksa noted that the right-wing parties were effectively divided, which contributed to their losses. He stated that it is imperative for both political factions to unite, transcending personal preferences, as political ideology must take precedence over individual interests. Rajapaksa urged that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the UNP work together to achieve electoral success.
Moreover, he called for an end to political conflicts and a collective effort to move forward.
Mahesh Senanayake also addressed the media, acknowledging the setbacks faced by the Southern political landscape. He stressed that, despite these challenges, a commitment to the nation is crucial. Senanayake warned that divisions among political groups could lead to the country’s downfall and argued that, historically, countries that have embraced leftist politics have struggled to recover. He advocated for a strong right-wing coalition to address the nation’s challenges.
He further underscored the importance of not misleading the public and standing firm on a unified policy, calling for collective action to fortify the Southern political camp in the face of adversity.
