The state of public emergency declared by the President has been extended for an additional month.
The relevant Gazette notification was issued yesterday (28) by the Secretary to the President, Dr. N. S. Kumanayake.
The extension has been made considering the ongoing disaster situation caused by Cyclone Ditva. Authorities stated that the decision was taken to ensure public safety, safeguard the survival of the country, and maintain the uninterrupted supply of essential goods and services to the public.
Meanwhile, the Government has also moved to further extend the Gazette notification declaring services provided by state corporations, government departments, local government institutions, cooperative societies, and their branches as essential services.
Accordingly, the earlier declaration covering key sectors such as electricity supply, petroleum product distribution, fuel and gas supply, health services, and several other critical services has also been extended once again.
