A group of police officers from Migomuwa issued an unconditional apology to a driver in the Supreme Court today for detaining and handcuffing him during ‘Operation Justice’. The incident involved the driver of a lawyer, who had filed a fundamental rights petition following the event.
The Supreme Court concluded the hearing after the officers involved, from the Negombo Police Station, apologized to the driver, Selvarach Rajapandi, a resident of Kalutara who was employed by the lawyer.
The officers who offered the apology were Police Sergeants Dissanayake and Premaratne, along with Constables Ratnasiri, Senadhira, and Nanayakkara.
In the petition filed by Mr. Rajapandi, Acting Inspector General of Police Senior DIG Priyantha Weerasuriya, Negombo Police Station Commander Pradeep Wirasinghe, and others were named as respondents. The incident occurred on January 16, when Mr. Rajapandi was returning from the Negombo District Court. Several motorbikes reportedly intercepted his vehicle, and he was searched and handcuffed.
