The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has issued a significant announcement concerning the upcoming 2023 local government elections.
The announcement, signed by the Commission’s Chairman, R. M. A. L. Ratnayake, highlights the Commission’s acknowledgment of the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the fundamental rights applications related to these elections, issued on August 22, 2024.
In this context, the Election Commission reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the democratic rights of the Sri Lankan populace. The Commission will work diligently to establish a date for the local government elections following the completion of the parliamentary elections, as mandated by the Supreme Court’s order.
Additionally, the Commission has confirmed that the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha elections will proceed as scheduled on October 26, in line with previous arrangements made during the parliamentary elections.
