Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath emphasized the importance of police officers being able to execute their duties free from political influence. Speaking at a recent event at the Kalutara Police Training School, he urged a shift in public perception regarding the police force, asserting that it is time to address the accusations that have plagued the organization in the past.
Minister Herath stated, “Attitudes about the police must change, and you can be a pioneer in making that change. You should have the courage to perform your duties and responsibilities correctly, without political interference, while maintaining law and order. Your only obligation is to follow the lawful orders of your superiors. I must stress this: you are only bound to follow legal orders issued by your superiors. If any officer gives an illegal order, you must have the strength to challenge it. Do not hesitate; carry out your duties fearlessly and in accordance with your conscience. In this new political landscape, no member of parliament, minister, or president should pressure you to engage in illegal activities. Thus, you have a responsibility to fulfill your duties appropriately in this context.”
