Minister Vijitha Herath, the Cabinet Spokesman, clarified that the recent meeting with IMF representatives was purely conceptual, with no decisions made regarding structural changes. He made these remarks during a press briefing on cabinet decisions held yesterday (08).
Elaborating further, Minister Herath stated that any decisions related to structural reforms must be discussed at the officer level.
When asked about the IMF discussions, he responded: “The IMF representatives engaged in a conceptual dialogue about how the new government might approach these issues. No specific decisions were made on structural changes. These matters will be addressed during officer-level discussions.”
Another question raised involved the National People’s Power (NPP) manifesto, which proposed an alternative debt sustainability analysis (DSA) that could lead to structured discussions. When asked if this alternative DSA had been prepared and presented, the minister responded:
“We have not yet established a full government under the National People’s Force; only the president has been appointed. Once a government is formed, we plan to provide more relief to the people. We have not altered our approach to creditors, nor have we shifted from the previous economic framework that prevented collapse. To revisit these decisions now would cause delays and lead to significant economic challenges.”
