Leader of the United Democratic Voice Party, Ranjan Ramanayake, has strongly criticized the government’s recent decision to suspend the ambulance service previously provided to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, denouncing the move as politically motivated retaliation. Addressing a gathering of party activists from the Puttalam district in Halawatha, Ramanayake expressed deep concern over what he described as a disregard for the former president’s health and safety.

In his speech, Ramanayake underscored the significant role Rajapaksa played in ending the country’s protracted civil war, noting that despite political differences, there should be a basic level of respect and consideration for a leader who has had a profound impact on the nation’s history. He stressed that decisions concerning medical services should not be clouded by political vendettas, and that such actions could set a dangerous precedent.

Ramanayake drew a comparison to international standards, pointing out that even India’s renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray was afforded medical transport services in recognition of his contributions. By referencing this, he argued that Sri Lanka should uphold similar respect for its former leaders, irrespective of current political climates. The United Democratic Voice Party leader warned that prioritizing political gain over humanitarian considerations could erode the country’s moral standing.
