Geethinath Kasilingam, a member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, has voiced alarm over the increase in liquor stores in the Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts.
In a letter addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Kasilingam noted the alarming number of liquor outlets stretching from Paranthan Junction to Iranimadu Junction in the Northern Province.
He highlighted that the majority of the local population comprises daily wage earners, emphasizing that the widespread availability of liquor shops poses a significant threat to their livelihoods.
Kasilingam alleged that the licenses for these establishments were granted in exchange for political support from certain local politicians. He urged the new president to take action by reviewing this situation and considering the closure of unnecessary liquor stores.
