The Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has congratulated the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) as it marks 100 years of service to Sri Lanka’s public health sector.
In a video message, Dr Tedros extended his congratulations to the Government of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, and the NIHS on the institute’s centenary celebrations.
He highlighted the NIHS’s origins as the pioneering health unit in Kalutara, noting that it played a key role in laying the foundation for what has become one of the world’s most respected public health systems—one that is community-oriented and driven by equity.
Dr Tedros also praised the NIHS for training generations of healthcare professionals who continue to deliver essential health services to communities across Sri Lanka.
Reaffirming the WHO’s commitment to the country, he said the organisation looks forward to strengthening its partnership with Sri Lanka and the NIHS to advance universal health coverage, enhance preparedness for future health challenges, and build resilient health systems.
Concluding his message, the WHO Director-General wished the Institute continued success, saying, “Here’s to the next century—leading, innovating and inspiring.”
