Visiting US and IMF representatives meets SJB

Members of the opposition, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) have held a discussion with the visiting US Treasury and State Department representatives, along with US Ambassador to Colombo Julie Chung.

SJB MP Dr. Harsha de Silva said that Opposition and SJB leader MP Sajith Premadasa, and fellow party members Kabir Hashim and Eran Wickremeratne had participated in the discussion.

“Appreciate all the humanitarian support via the United States Agency for International Development (USAID),” he Tweeted.

MP Harsha de Silva further said that the group had also held a discussion with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation that is currently in Sri Lanka.

Stating that Sri Lanka’s crisis is utterly complicated, MP de Silva warned that the coming months will be “very tough”.

The IMF cannot lend to Sri Lanka until the country’s creditors give an assurance on their agreement with Sri Lanka on debt restructuring, adding that it is now complicated due to the case involving A creditor.

A haircut solution will be based on an agreement by the government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on fiscal consolidation, he pointed out.

MP Harsha de Silva said as a responsible opposition, his party agrees that much delayed major reforms must be undertaken to save Sri Lanka.

“We must open up, break the shackles and engage with the world. So, we don’t want to scuttle the @GotabayaR @RW_UNP plan; but there must be one. Already very late,” he added. (curtesy news wire)
