Vijay Moves to Form Government, Seeks Congress Support After TVK Shakes Tamil Nadu Politics

Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has taken a major step toward reshaping Tamil Nadu politics by reaching out to the Indian National Congress for support in forming a new government in the state.

The move follows TVK’s impressive performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, where the party significantly disrupted the decades-long political dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The results signaled a dramatic shift in voter sentiment, with urban voters and several key social groups rallying behind Vijay’s new political force.

Senior Congress leader K. C. Venugopal confirmed on Tuesday that Vijay had approached the party seeking its support to establish a new administration in Tamil Nadu. He said the Congress’s Tamil Nadu unit will meet in Chennai on Wednesday to discuss the proposal and arrive at a formal decision.

Venugopal also made it clear that the Congress is not in favour of allowing a BJP-led government to emerge in the state. According to him, the people’s verdict reflects a strong preference for a secular government rather than one aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“The mandate clearly indicates that the people want a secular government in Tamil Nadu,” Venugopal said, underlining the Congress party’s position as it weighs its next political move.

Vijay’s entry into electoral politics has rapidly transformed the political landscape, with TVK emerging as a serious challenger to the traditional Dravidian giants. His appeal among first-time voters, urban middle-class communities, and sections of Dalit voters has added new energy to the state’s political equation.

If Congress decides to back TVK, Tamil Nadu could witness one of its biggest political realignments in decades—potentially ending the long-standing two-party dominance and opening the door for a new chapter under Vijay’s leadership.
