The Chairman of the National Movement for the Protection of the Nation, Venerable Elle Gunawansa Thero, has submitted a memorandum to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake calling for the removal of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasooriya from the post of Minister of Education and urging a cabinet reshuffle.
In the memorandum addressed to the President, the Venerable Thero states that the arbitrary education reforms being introduced at the initiative of the Prime Minister indicate that the country, its people, and the Buddha Sasana are facing a serious threat under the current government.
The memorandum further notes that such a weak and indifferent administration is causing direct harm to the nation and its citizens.
Venerable Elle Gunawansa Thero also emphasizes that the proposed education reforms lack transparency, as the views of Buddhist monks, clergy of other religions, teachers, and education experts have not been sought in the reform process.
Accordingly, the memorandum asserts that the methodology adopted to introduce these reforms was fundamentally flawed from the outset and therefore lacks validity.
The Venerable Thero expresses the expectation that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Head of State, will act swiftly to protect the country, the people, and the Buddha Sasana from this situation, and fulfill what the memorandum describes as his historic responsibility.
