Reports have surfaced of significant unrest among Members of Parliament and ministers after the head of a key parliamentary committee allegedly appropriated a room designated exclusively for ministers within the Parliament complex.
According to parliamentary sources, the individual in question visited the ministerial room on Friday, the 10th, raising eyebrows across political circles. Historically, ministerial rooms in the Parliament complex have been strictly reserved for serving ministers.
Sources further revealed that, in a previous instance, an Attorney General’s request for access to a ministerial room was denied by the same individual when he held another prominent position in Parliament. Observers have called it ironic that the very person who upheld these protocols is now allegedly using a ministerial room after being appointed to lead a parliamentary committee.
This committee reportedly has a dedicated office in Colombo, but insiders suggest that reluctance to use the facility stems from the comparatively superior food and beverage amenities available within the Parliament complex. As a result, the Colombo office has reportedly been closed for some time.
The controversy is further fueled by revelations that, after retiring from a high-ranking parliamentary position, the individual was appointed to this committee under the previous government. For his role, he receives an allowance and benefits exceeding six hundred thousand rupees per month, adding to the criticism surrounding his use of ministerial privileges.
This development has stirred discussions on the propriety of such actions, with many calling for clarity and adherence to established parliamentary norms.
