University of Peradeniya Vice-Chancellor Suspends Student Union Activities, Sparking Student Opposition
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya has announced the suspension of all activities of the General Students’ Union and Faculty Student Unions within the university.

According to an official statement, this decision effectively prohibits the General Students’ Union and Faculty Student Unions from organizing student gatherings, holding meetings, addressing students, or convening on any matters within or outside the university premises.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that this suspension would remain in effect for one week, starting from the 17th. The statement further warned that disciplinary action would be taken against anyone who violates these directives.

In response, the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) expressed strong opposition to the decision, claiming that such actions have become increasingly common at the University of Peradeniya. The federation argued that this move further erodes student freedom within the university.

The IUSF also highlighted that the formation of student unions is a right guaranteed under the University Act, and fundamental rights such as the freedom to assemble, speak, and express opinions are enshrined in the Constitution.

Meanwhile, the Natha University Students’ Union issued a statement condemning the suspension, describing it as a violation of democratic principles. They accused the administration of using the Vice-Chancellor’s powers as a pretext to suppress student activism, asserting that such actions are unacceptable.
