The United Kingdom has announced a series of new trade measures that will grant duty-free access to goods from several countries, including Sri Lanka.
According to the British High Commission, the most notable and beneficial change for Sri Lanka is the relaxation of regulations for the garment sector. This development is expected to significantly ease market access for Sri Lankan garment exporters to the UK.
Under the new provisions, Sri Lanka can export garments to the UK duty-free, even when those garments are manufactured using raw materials imported from other countries. This marks a substantial shift from previous rules and is set to deliver a major boost to Sri Lanka’s economy—particularly its garment industry.
The garment sector remains one of the country’s leading export earners and is a vital source of employment for thousands of Sri Lankans. The new trade measures are therefore expected to bring both economic relief and enhanced trade opportunities.
