The United States and Sri Lanka have strengthened their defence collaboration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under the State Partnership Program (SPP) between the Montana National Guard and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence.
The agreement, signed on November 14 and tabled in Parliament today (18), aims to deepen bilateral cooperation in key areas such as disaster response, maritime security, and professional military exchanges.
U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung, in a statement shared on social media, emphasized that transparency is essential to building trust between nations. She said the newly formalized partnership underscores a shared commitment to openness and strengthens the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
“We’re proud of this partnership and look forward to expanding cooperation through the SPP, especially on disaster response, maritime security, and professional military exchanges—benefiting both our nations and contributing to a more secure Indo-Pacific,” Ambassador Chung stated.
The U.S. Embassy noted that the collaboration under the SPP framework will support regional stability and enhance Sri Lanka’s capacity in multiple defence-related areas.
The press release issued by the U.S. Embassy provides additional details on the MOU and its expected impact on bilateral security cooperation.
