During his visit to Sri Lanka from February 23 to 24, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, Richard Verma, reiterated the United States’ dedication to Sri Lanka’s economic growth and stability. Verma engaged with government officials, civil society representatives, and business leaders to discuss various aspects of bilateral cooperation.

Meetings with President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Foreign Minister Ali Sabry focused on Sri Lanka’s progress within the IMF program, emphasizing inclusive economic reforms essential for sustainable growth. Deputy Secretary Verma emphasized the importance of upholding human rights, particularly freedom of expression while exploring avenues to strengthen defence and maritime cooperation.

Highlighting the United States’ commitment to bolstering Sri Lanka’s maritime capabilities, Verma announced the intent to transfer a fourth medium endurance cutter to the Sri Lanka Navy, pending congressional approval. This move aims to enhance Sri Lanka’s maritime security efforts in its Exclusive Economic Zone and contribute to regional stability.

Moreover, Verma visited the West Container Terminal (WCT) at the Port of Colombo, a significant infrastructure project financed by the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. The WCT is poised to elevate Sri Lanka’s role as a key logistics hub in the South Asian region, fostering economic prosperity without adding to the country’s debt burden.

Deputy Secretary Verma’s visit underscores the enduring partnership between the United States and Sri Lanka, signalling a mutual commitment to shared prosperity and security goals in the Indo-Pacific region.
