The Constitutional Council will meet today at 2.00 pm at the Parliament complex under the chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to consider the matter.

Although the Constitutional Council met on two previous occasions to consider the President’s recommendation to extend the service of the Attorney General, it was not able to take a final decision.

The President has made this recommendation to extend the service of the Attorney General until the 31st of December.

Attorney General Rajaratnam’s term of service is scheduled to end on the 26th.

Parliament sources said that a final decision will be taken today regarding this recommendation.

Meanwhile, many members of the opposition have recently publicly expressed their opposition to the President’s decision to extend the service of the Attorney General when the presidential election is approaching.
