The Public Health Inspectors’ Union (PHIU) expressed its disaffection with the law enforcement authorities over the alleged lack of progress in the ongoing investigation into the murder of the Union’s Treasurer, PHI Roshan Kumara.

In a context where it marks one month since the murder, PHIU President Upul Rohana told The Daily Morning yesterday (26) that the Union is not satisfied with the progress of the ongoing investigations into the incident, and that therefore, they have planned to stage a silent protest near the Galle bus station tomorrow (28) with the participation of all the PHIs in the Southern Province, demanding the expediting of the investigations. Rohana further noted that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, informed them that the investigations were handed over to a special investigation team at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and that therefore, they do not hope to lodge any other complaints regarding the incident.

“Today (26) marks the first month since his demise. But, the CID has failed to find anything crucial regarding the murder. Even though the investigations are going on without obstruction, progress cannot be seen. However, the new IGP informed us that the investigations were transferred to a special team at the CID. Therefore, we hope for some progress in the months to come,” he said.

The Administrative PHI of the Karandeniya Division, Roshan Kumara (51) who was also the Treasurer of the PHIU, was shot and murdered by two unknown gunmen last month (on 26 February). Following the murder, many parties, including Opposition politicians and civil society organisations, alleged that the particular murder was led by a certain political agenda that aims to cripple the public service.
