The US has echoed the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka’s (HRCSL) concerns about alleged human rights violations during the recent ‘Yukthiya’ Operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Police and the Ministry of Public Security.

Julie J. Chung, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, emphasised the importance of combating drug trafficking while emphasising the importance of law enforcement operations adhering to the principles of the rule of law and due process.

“Striking this balance is vital for justice and maintaining public trust,” she went on to say.

Earlier, the HRCSL expressed deep concern and launched an immediate investigation into reports of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment during ‘Yukthiya’ Operation search operations.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has also expressed serious concerns about the operation, emphasising the contradiction between reports of widespread injustice and the operation’s title, ‘Yukthiya,’.
