The United Nations Human Rights Council says it condemns the government’s repressive response to peaceful protests.

Simon Manley has said this in a special announcement on behalf of the CORE Group of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The organization calls on the Sri Lankan authorities to secure the right to peaceful assembly and the right to express opinions.

They say that the government should be held accountable for the violence that has been unleashed against peaceful protests.

The United Nations Human Rights Council emphasizes that the government must work to protect the rule of law and representative democracy.

In its announcement, the commission has also mentioned the importance of holding elections to strengthen the confidence of the citizens.

The UN Working Group on Sri Lanka includes the United States of America, Malawi, Canada, Montenegro, North Macedonia and the United States.
