According to preliminary investigations, two army intelligence officers who went to find information about a drug trade in the Halgahakumbura area of Borella, Vanathamulla, shot and killed a woman in their attempt to engage in illegal activity.
A senior police officer mentioned that these intelligence officers have successfully provided information about drug trafficking to the Colombo South Division’s anti-corruption division.
Despite this, it is a matter of regret that these intelligence officers go beyond their intelligence duty. The officer also mentioned that holding a person and handcuffing him, asking for information and showing firearms does not reflect intelligence duty.
These two intelligence officers are two lance corporals attached to the army headquarters. According to the behavior of these intelligence officers, who are 28 and 29 years old, the local residents have thought that they are a group of civil officers of the police.
Yesterday (13th) night, when they were about to take away a person who was caught by them in handcuffs near a house of a drug trafficker, when he protested, one of the intelligence officers activated the firearm and attacked the handcuffed person with the butt of the weapon and the shot fired and hit the one who was nearby. Police say that a 25-year-old woman was hit in the chest. A woman named Melanie Kanchana died on the spot.
Police say that the local residents are worried after this incident. The police say that it is clearly recorded in the security cameras and when examining the footage, it appears that the intelligence officers are violating the law and carrying out many activities that are not assigned to them.
As these intelligence officers at the same time left the place and surrendered to the Borella police, the tense situation that had arisen among the people was also brought under control.
