The Supreme Court today (08) upheld the death sentence imposed by a three-judge bench of the Colombo High Court on six defendants, including former DIG Vas Gunawardena and his son Ravindu Gunawardena, who were sentenced to death. (Sri Lanka Latest News)
In 2013, they were accused and convicted of kidnapping and killing a millionaire businessman, Mohammad Shyam, who resides in Bambalapitiya area.
A sub-inspector and three police constables are among the accused who have been awarded the death penalty.
The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal petitions filed by Vas Gunawardena and other defendants demanding that they be acquitted of these punishments.
