The Union of Professionals has started a nationwide strike today (15) based on several demands including the new tax amendments implemented by the government and the increase in electricity tariffs.
Right now, the strike is going on in every government hospital in the island.
It has been learned that medical officers, nurses, laboratory services and other health professionals as well as hospital junior employees are participating in the strike.
Teachers’ and principals’ unions say that the strike is in effect today in all the schools in the island.
Also, port workers are currently on strike.
Many railway trade unions, including the Railway Locomotive Operators Union, have already started the strike.
Despite the strike, an office train had started running from Galle to Colombo Fort this morning.
Army and police personnel were seen deployed for the security of the train.
