  • At this celebration, there was evident camaraderie between the media and the police.

President Ranil Wickremasinghe, who believes that the rule of law cannot be preserved without the police and an independent judiciary, has stated that the two institutions must be safeguarded as the country moves forward.

The President also stated that the country’s democracy and rule of law must be established in order for the country’s economic recovery programme to be successful.

President Ranil Wickremasinghe made the remarks while speaking at the Bambalapitiya Police Field Force Headquarters on the occasion of Sri Lanka’s 156th Police Day (03).

At the ceremony, the President was greeted by a police guard of honour.

The President also awarded the “Presidential Police Valor Medal” to officer Jayantha Gunawardena, who died while on duty, and symbolically presented certificates of appreciation to 30 police officers assigned to parliamentary security.

The police website and “E News” newspaper were also launched, and a cheque for Rs.100 million from the Police Reward Fund was presented to the newly established “Legal Relief Fund” by Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne.

A live dog show and a performance by the Police Western Band added colour to the event.
