Yesterday (24) the Supreme Court ordered the Inspector General of Police to appear before the court on April 03 regarding the non-implementation of an order to prepare a series of guidelines to prevent cases of shooting death when people arrested by the police are taken out for various investigations and presented to the court today. Ordered.

This order was issued by the three-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Mr. S. Turai Raja, A.  H.M.D Nawaz and Mr. Achala Vengappuli.

In 2008, the Supreme Court ruled on a petition filed by his wife Fatima Sharmila against the shooting death of a suspect named Mohammad Irfan who was in the custody of Kompanjaveediya police for trying to escape when he was taken out for investigation. The Inspector General of Police had been ordered on February 05th to prepare a series of guide lines which would prevent such happening in the future and file it before the court yesterday (24th).

But when the relevant petition was called today, Deputy Solicitor General Madhava Tennakoon appeared before the court on behalf of the Attorney General and the Inspector General of Police had not presented the relevant set of guidelines to the court.

Mr. Justice Thureiraja, the chairman of the three-judge bench, who made strong accusations in this regard, said, “The police department has been functioning for almost two hundred years. Recently, the Supreme Court has announced many decisions regarding cases of brutal torture. But a proper program has not been implemented to prevent cruel tortures by taking them as an example. To prevent this situation, police officers should be given formal training. The Inspector General of Police should allocate funds and provide special training. There is a separate legal division within the police department. There are also many legal officers. Despite this, it is a sad situation that such incidents cannot be prevented.” declared in open court.

After that, the three-judge panel issued this order to the Inspector General of Police.
