The Maldives’ main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party, which holds a majority in Parliament, plans to file an impeachment motion against President Mohamed Muizzu, local media reported on Monday.

This comes a day after violence broke out in the Maldives Parliament, with government MPs from the pro-government parties People’s National Congress (PNC) and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) disrupting proceedings and confronting the Speakers.

According to Maldives-based news portal Adhahdhu, 34 members, including representatives from the MDP and Democrats, have expressed support for the impeachment motion against the president.

The clash occurred during a special session called to seek parliamentary approval for President Mohamed Muizzu’s cabinet ministers. These included Ahmed Usham, the Attorney General; Mohamed Saeed, the Economic Minister; Dr. Ali Haidar, the Housing Minister; and Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the Islamic Minister.

The Maldives’ Constitution and Parliament Standing Orders state that the President can be impeached with 56 votes.

On Sunday. PNC and PPM filed a no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem, both MDP members. The motions received support from 23 lawmakers.

On Sunday, a scuffle erupted between Kanditheemu MP Abdulla Shaheem Abdul Hakeem Shaheem and Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa after the former stumbled and inadvertently collided with Easa.
