A special meeting of the Legislative Assembly was held this morning under the chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
It has been learned that in this discussion held through Zoom technology, there has been a discussion again regarding the posting of advertisements for the appointment of representatives to other commissions including the Election Commission.
Although the Legislative Council had planned to publish these advertisements last weekend, they had taken steps to suspend the publication of these advertisements due to the opposition of Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition.
Accordingly, it is reported that in the discussion held this morning, there was a discussion about the publication of notices related to the appointment of new members to the independent commissions, including the Election Commission.
There too, the opposition leader has strongly pointed out that at the moment when an election has been called, no decision should be taken that affects the members of the commission, and that there is no problem with the removal of the election commission and publication of notices to appoint members for other commissions.
When the leader of the opposition said this, the group including the speaker pointed out that despite the advertisement, there is no hindrance to the election process and it will take about 2 more weeks for the process to start.
But even there, the leader of the opposition has indicated that he strongly objects to it, and that this should not be done at this time when the members of the Election Commission have received death threats. That should be looked into
However, despite the opposition leader’s objection, the Legislative Council has decided to publish advertisements.
After that, it is reported that there has been a discussion about giving information to the media about the deliberations of the Legislative Assembly.
