Alexei Navalny, who is considered to be Russia’s most unique opposition leader in the last decade, has died in a prison in the Arctic Circle, the prison service said. Sri Lanka Latest News

Navalny, who is seen as an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin, was serving a 19-year prison sentence for what are believed to be politically motivated offences.

Late last year, he was taken to a penal colony in the Arctic, considered one of the harshest prisons.

The prison service of the Yamalo-Nenet district said he was “in an ill condition” after a walk on Friday.

A statement issued by the Prison Service said he had “suddenly lost consciousness”. The announcement further stated that an emergency medical team was immediately called and tried to treat him but it was unsuccessful.

“Doctors declared the prisoner dead. The cause of death is being investigated.”

Navalny’s lawyer, Leonid Solovyov, told Russian media that he was unable to comment at this time. However, one of Alexei Navalny’s closest aides wrote on social media X: “Russian authorities have published a confession that they killed Alexei Navalny in prison. We have no way of confirming or disproving that.”
