Welikanda Police say that the body of a detainee who was being rehabilitated at Polonnaruwa Welikanda Kandakadu Rehabilitation Camp was found in a deserted dormitory there.
He is a 27-year-old married resident of Padukka, Welikanda Police Station Commander Inspector Samantha Ratnayake said.
He had come to Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center for rehabilitation for a one-year sentence on August 28 and the police have also found some letters written by him to his wife.
According to the police who conducted the investigation, a counseling officer of the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center saw him hanging from a beam in an unused dormitory at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center and trying to strangle himself with a part of a mattress cover.
Accordingly, the rehabilitation recipient was taken to Lankapura B.O.P. by the ambulance of that camp. 316 has been admitted to the local hospital and the doctors have declared that he was already dead, said the Welikanda police who are conducting the investigation.
The Welikanda Police, who are conducting the investigation, state that the post-mortem examination of the detainee will be conducted today.
