Mr. Atula Senaratne, a former senior professor in the Geology Department of the University of Peradeniya, says that there are large cracks in the deep seabed to the west of Colombo and there is a need to conduct a formal investigation into whether there is a connection between them and the earthquakes affecting the Western Province.
He also said that regardless of the recent earthquake in Beruwala area, it is urgent to carry out a formal investigation and find out what is the main cause of the earthquakes.
He also said that it is possible to identify the main causes of earthquakes by installing seismometers around Colombo and analyzing the data obtained through them. The professor said that since 1615, earthquakes have been reported in areas around Colombo, but the cause of them has not been identified yet.
He said that earthquakes may occur in the future towards the west of Colombo and if a strong earthquake occurs in the vicinity of Colombo where there is a high population density, the damage caused by it may be enormous and therefore it is extremely important to pay special attention in this regard.
