The Canadian Acting High Commissioner summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today to discuss imposition of sanctions on two former presidents.

The Canadian Acting High Commissioner to Sri Lanka has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning (11) to inquire about the Canadian government’s imposition of sanctions on the former presidents of Sri Lanka, Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa and Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The Government of Canada will impose sanctions on the two former presidents of Sri Lanka, Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and Mr. Staff Sergeant Sunil Ratnayake, Lt. Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi for human rights violations that occurred between 1983 and 2009.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolly has stated that if they have assets in Canada, those assets will be suspended and they will not be able to enter Canada.
