According to a complaint made by Citizen Power Organization, the Bribery Commission has started an investigation into this incident.
Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage had previously issued a notice to the officials of the Bribery Commission asking them to appear before the court to find out whether there has been any criminal activity under the Bribery Act regarding this amount.
During the questioning conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department regarding this incident, the former President had stated that the money in question had been given by businessmen associated with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, and that the money was planned to be distributed among the people whose houses were destroyed by the protesters.
However, the former president had stated to the Criminal Investigation Department that he was unable to reveal the names of the people who contributed the money as the documents related to the financial reports were missing after the struggle activists took over the premises.
In the meantime, the CID has informed the court that the excerpts of those investigations are to be forwarded to the Attorney General to find out whether an offense has been committed under the Money Laundering Act.
