Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission Mr. Janaka Ratnayake said today (2) that the political authority is taking various measures to destroy the independence of the Public Utilities Commission and it is a historical mistake.

Mr. Rathnayake said that it is not a good situation to put pressure on the independent institutions at a time when the country needs more independent institutions. He also mentioned that a process of increasing the electricity tariffs is underway after receiving a wrong interpretation from the Attorney General for the method of increasing the electricity tariffs.

Mr. Janaka Ratnayake, chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, further said that the proposal to increase the electricity tariffs submitted to the Cabinet is very unfair, and the Public Utilities Commission is against it.
