Recent research has highlighted a concerning increase in the number of boys aged 13-14 becoming addicted to smoking. This trend underscores the need for heightened vigilance from both parents and teachers, according to Dr. Rumi Ruben, a psychologist at Karapitiya Hospital, speaking to Mawrata.
Dr. Ruben noted that some of these young smokers are now transitioning to illegal tobacco products, compounding the issue.
He further emphasized that smoking addiction among teenagers is significantly disrupting their education. Parents are urged to monitor for signs, such as unexplained disappearances of money from the household. Meanwhile, educators and tutors should take proactive steps, such as checking students’ bags both in school and in private classrooms.
Dr. Ruben also stressed the importance of intervention, urging parents to seek help from psychiatrists to guide these children away from the dangers of addiction.
