The ‘Varsity Battles’ 2024, organized by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) and the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), successfully concluded its Cluster 1 competition recently at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka. This exciting event, aimed at promoting capital market education and awareness amongst state university students, brought together teams from faculties of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka, Eastern University of Sri Lanka, and Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka.

The Varsity Battles quiz competition, now in its second consecutive year, consists of two stages: stage one – the ‘Inter-Faculty’ competitions and stage two – the ‘National Level’ competitions. These stages are expected to attract teams representing 13 State Universities. In the ‘Inter-Faculty’ stage, all universities are divided into three clusters, and this event marked the Cluster 1 competition.

The competition saw a turnout of 31 teams from various faculties across the three universities, all competing in a series of rounds that tested their knowledge in capital markets, general knowledge, Sri Lankan economy and business, current affairs, sports, and entertainment.

The top three winning teams from each university will represent their universities in the National Level competition of the Varsity Battles during stage 2.

South Eastern University of Sri Lanka will be represented by two teams from the Faculty of Technology and one from the Faculty of Management. Eastern University of Sri Lanka will be represented by three teams from the Faculty of Agriculture, while Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka will field two teams from the Faculty of Applied Sciences and one from the Faculty of Management. These teams will compete in the finals, along with faculty winners from other universities.

The overall winner for Cluster 1 of the Varsity Battles 2024 inter-faculty quiz competition was the exceptional Team 3 from the Faculty of Technology of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka, walking away with a Rs. 100,000/- cash prize.

Advancing to the National Level competition, these teams will compete for the title of ultimate champion of the Varsity Battles 2024, with cash prizes of Rs. 400,000/- for the winning team, Rs. 300,000/- for the 1st runner-up, and Rs. 200,000/- for the 2nd runner-up.

The Varsity Battles 2024 is made possible by key sponsors collaborating with the SEC and CSE, featuring platinum sponsors, Bartleet Religare Securities (PVT) Ltd and First Capital Holdings PLC, alongside co-sponsor Motorola by Abans.

The competition is part of the ongoing efforts of the SEC and CSE to strengthen financial education and increase awareness in Sri Lanka’s university system, contributing to the development of a more financially literate and informed future workforce.
