Switzerland’s Federal Court has acquitted a Swiss-Tamil man accused of fraud and ordered he receives 19,400 francs in compensation.

The final judgment was made on the 9 January, The federal prosecutor had initially accused the man and twelve other people of using cash loans from the Credit Suisse subsidiary Bank Now to set up a fraudulent system and thus finance the LTTE, sending around 15 million Swiss francs. They were acquitted of all charges.

In 2019, Switzerland’s Federal Court ruled that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) were not a criminal organisation and that its primary goal was to establish an independent homeland, following this landmark ruling that 12 Swiss Tamils were acquitted of charges filed by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG).

Despite the main defendant being acquitted he was then charged with fraud of which he was found guilty. He appealed against the ruling in which the federal court ruled in his favour, acquitting him of the charge and ordering that he receives compensation.
