The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to suspended Prisons Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya, who had been remanded on suspicion of aiding and abetting the unlawful release of an inmate from the Anuradhapura Prison under the guise of a presidential amnesty.

The order was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayatunga, following a hearing where submissions were made by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the defense counsel.

As per the court’s ruling, Upuldeniya was released on a cash bail of Rs. 25,000, along with two sureties amounting to Rs. 2 million each. Furthermore, the Magistrate imposed a ban prohibiting the suspect from entering any prison facility across the country.

In addition, a travel ban was enacted, and the suspect was ordered to surrender his passport to the court.
